Therapy for athletes who are mostly doing fine.

One-to-one therapy for young athletes across Ontario, delivered by registered clinicians who understand sport. Virtual or in person. No referral, no diagnosis, no waiting until it gets bad.

01Why athletes come

Most of them are not in crisis.

They just want it to stop costing them. These are the reasons athletes actually walk in.

01

“I get in my head before games and I can't turn it off.”

02

“I used to love this. Lately I dread going.”

03

“One mistake and the rest of my game is gone.”

04

“I'm back from injury physically. I'm not back in my head.”

05

“I don't know who I am if I'm not the athlete.”

06

“My coach and my parents want different things from me.”

07

“Everyone says I'm doing great and I feel nothing.”

08

“I want to be better at handling pressure, not just at my sport.”

If none of these sound like your athlete but something still feels off, that is also a reason. You are allowed to come and find out.

02How to think about it

Part of the team, not a last resort.

Serious athletes already build a team around the body. This is the same principle, applied to the part that decides whether the training shows up on the day.

Strength coach

Builds the body that can take the load.

Physiotherapist

Keeps it healthy, and rebuilds it after injury.

Nutritionist

Fuels it so the work is possible.

Therapist

Builds the part that decides what happens after the mistake — and what the sport costs the person playing it.

Nobody waits until their hamstring tears to see a physio. The same logic applies here.

Teammates sitting along a bench courtside.

Every other part of an athlete's support team is treated as an investment. This one gets treated as an emergency measure.

We would like to change that, starting with making it easy to book before anything has gone wrong.

03Straight answers

What people assume, and what's true.

The assumptionThe reality
Therapy is for people with serious problemsMost of our athletes are functioning well and want to function better
You need a diagnosis to qualifyYou need no diagnosis and no referral. You book it yourself
My problem isn't big enoughThere is no threshold. “It's been bothering me” is a complete reason
It means something is wrong with meIt means you would rather deal with it now than in five years
My coach or team will find outNothing is shared with a coach, a club or a school without written consent
Once you start you're stuck in itOne option is exactly six sessions with a defined end

Still not sure it's “enough” of a reason?

That is the most common thing people say before they book. Fifteen minutes on a call will tell you more than another month of wondering.

04What actually happens

Nobody is going to make you cry.

Most of the hesitation is about not knowing what you are walking into. So here is the whole thing, start to finish.

Step by step

What's the process?

Five steps, and you can stop after any of them.

  1. 01

    You get in touch

A short form or an email. No intake questionnaire, no gatekeeping.

  2. 02

    A free consultation

Fifteen minutes to say what's going on and ask anything. No cost, no obligation.

  3. 03

    First session

Mostly questions. What the sport asks of you, what's been happening, what you want different.

  4. 04

    You set the goal

You decide what this is for. The clinician builds the work around it, not the other way round.

  5. 05

    Weekly or fortnightly

Fifty minutes, virtual or in person, at a time that survives a training schedule.

The details

What can I expect?

Including the privacy questions people are often too polite to ask.

Who is in the room

The athlete and the clinician. For younger athletes a parent may join the first part of session one, then step out.

What parents are told

Whether sessions are happening and how things are going in general terms. What is said in the room stays in the room, with the legal exceptions around immediate safety.

What coaches are told

Nothing, without written consent from the athlete. Clubs and schools never receive individual information.

How long, and where

Fifty minutes, virtual anywhere in Ontario or in person. Six sessions or ongoing — the athlete chooses, and can stop at any point.

Now that you know what it involves.

Free first conversation, no obligation, and no need to have worked out the problem first.

05Two ways in

A fixed six, or for as long as it is useful.

Both are one-to-one therapy with a registered clinician. Not sure which fits? Ask for the consultation and we will work it out with you.

6 sessions · One to one

The Reset

One goal, a clear start and a clear end. Best when something specific is in the way — a performance dip, a return from injury, a confidence crisis.

Is this a good fit?
  • Freezes at the line, the blocks or the tee
  • Has lost confidence since one particular game, race or tryout
  • Is medically cleared after injury but still can't go full speed
  • Falls apart after one mistake and can't recover inside the game
$180Per 50-minute session  ·  six sessions

Ongoing · One to one

Ongoing individual counselling

No fixed end date. For more than one goal, or support that needs to last — a full season, a career transition, a major life event.

Is this a good fit?
  • Has been struggling for months rather than weeks
  • Is carrying something from outside sport into it, or the reverse
  • Is facing de-selection, retirement or leaving their sport
  • Has been through a loss, a trauma or a major family change

Coverage

Covered by most extended health benefit plans. Check yours for Registered Social Worker or Registered Psychotherapist, as limits vary. You get a receipt after every session to submit. Not covered by OHIP.

Who we work with

Young athletes across Ontario at every level, house league to provincial, individual and team sports. You do not need to be competing at a high level to qualify.

Who you'd see
Registered and accountable

Every clinician is registered and in good standing with their Ontario college — a Registered Social Worker (OCSWSSW) or Registered Psychotherapist (CRPO). That means supervised training, a code of conduct, mandatory insurance, and a complaints process independent of us. Ask for a registration number at any point. Why the Centre exists →

06Questions

The things parents ask first.

My kid says nothing is wrong. Should they still come?
Often, yes. Plenty of athletes arrive saying exactly that and leave with language for something they had not been able to name. A consultation costs nothing and commits you to nothing — and if your athlete genuinely does not want to be there, we will tell you that too. Therapy that someone is dragged into rarely works.
Will this go on a record somewhere?
Clinical records are kept privately by the clinician, as regulation requires, and are not shared with schools, clubs, coaches or your family doctor without written consent. Nothing appears on a school record, and nothing follows an athlete into selection.
Is my child too young for this?
We work with young athletes across a wide age range and adjust the approach to the age — less talking and more doing with younger children, more direct conversation with teenagers. If your child would be better served by something else, including family work or a different specialist, we will say so and help you find it.
What if we try it and it isn't right?
You stop. There is no contract and no minimum beyond whichever option you chose. If it isn't working because the fit with the clinician is wrong, tell us — that is common, it is not a failure, and it is usually fixable.
What does it cost?
Sessions are $180 for fifty minutes, whether you choose The Reset or ongoing counselling. The first consultation is free. Most extended health plans reimburse sessions with a Registered Social Worker or Registered Psychotherapist, so a good portion of that often comes back — ask us and we will tell you exactly what to check on your plan.
